Saddle pads

Saddle pads are an absolute necessity when it comes to saddling up your horse. The saddle pad or saddle blanket will protect your horse's back by cushioning the saddle and absorbing sweat. The pad will also extend the life of your saddle. Saddle pads are usually comprised of layers of felt, foam or other modern material including gel. The type of pad you will need for your horse will depend on the type of saddle you have; English, Western, or Australian.

Saddle blankets and saddle pads can both be used with Australian saddles, western saddles, and other types of saddles with a solid tree and that cover many square inches of a horse's back. You may find that the blankets are somewhat thinner than most pads, so you should choose the type of saddle pad that best suits your own situation.

Before buying a saddle pad be sure to measure your saddle. Start at the front of the pommel and measure straight across to the top of the cantle, then add about 1 - 2 inches on both ends. To keep the horse comfortable during vigorous exercise, make sure there is at least 1 1/2 - 2 inches of pad showing around the edges. This will ensure that the saddle won't rub if it moves.

Never buy a western saddle pad to be used with an english saddle, or an english saddle pad for use with a western saddle. This could cause tension on the horse's back and withers, and eventually a nasty vet bill for you!

A hybrid type of saddle pad called a quarter sheet is a cross between a saddle blanket and a horse blanket. It is longer than a typical pad, covering the horse from shoulder to hip. This type of pad is most often used in colder weather to keep the horse's muscles loose when warming up for a competition. The quarter sheet can also be used on a horse that is standing around under saddle running the risk of stiffening up if they get a chill.

Some saddle pads have a 4 - 6 inch cut or opening where it sets upon the withers of the horse, allowing extra movement for the horse. You can also find pads that are specifically designed to compensate for swayback or lordosis. Many of today's modern pads are even designed using gel or memory foam to absorb shock.

Your choices are virtually endless when it comes to saddle pads. Shop around to find the pad that suits your horse's needs and your finances. Check online for some great deals on pads as well.
